" 'Cause it's not the way, that it has to be, don't trade our love for tea & sympathy..."
- Jars Of Clay, Tea and Sympathy
I'm sitting, writing in this virtual diary/rant/reflection as I listen to this song, and I'm thinking, how darn appropriate this song can be. Remember Jars Of Clay? They burst onto the scene a few years back as a Christian band with contemporary music, but now their impact on the fame-o-meter is registering practically nil. Fame IS fleeting, but I'm sure you already knew that.
We are all living the great facade that is Life, and sometimes, the outer covering thins sufficiently that we can peer inside and see what is really moving beneath the surface, like an alligator in the Florida swamps. Perhaps a more identifiable analogy would be that we are all in the Matrix, plugged in and oblivious to the machines who leech our body heat and bioelectricity, placating us with their version of a virtual world.
Morphesus was right when he said that some would grow so inert, so hopelessly dependant on the system, that they would fight to defend it. In a way, that's so true here. Are some of us so accustomed to the false fronts everybody wears that they reject the idea of honesty? Of telling people straight to their face just what is the damn f*cking truth? I hope not, and yet there's so much evidence lying around me to suggest the contrary...
Ah, the days when we were young, and we could tell our peers just what we meant, face to face. Now pretty much everything is veiled in vague or non-committal language. Mostly it's meant for a good purpose, to avoid offending someone, but it gets out of hand when these false words are taken and twisted, and people get hurt, innocents even. Friendships die, love wilts, even blood ties are severed.
We don't have to be mean. We don't have to deceive others. But yet we do, and to what end and purpose? I have known many schemers and double-crossers, many two-faced people, but I cannot recall a single happy one. For the person with the false front cannot always be entirely sure he is not deceiving himself as well.
It doesn't have to be this way... it doesn't have to end like this
Someday, I hope some is kind enough to pull the plug
'Yea, though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death, I shall fear no evil, for thou art with me.'
