We sat together on the breakwater, our legs hanging out over the gentle splashes of the waves below.
There wasn't much to say between us. I was beginning to regret the suggestion of coming here.
And then something magical happened.
"Can you see that star, that one over there?" She pointed at a pinprick of light in the heavens.
"Yes."
"Do you know what that star stands for?"
"No, not really."
She looked at me with a puzzled expression.
"You're not really interested, are you?"
"No, I am. It's just that... I'm not really good on stars." I shrugged. So much for an education in astrology.
She went back to star-gazing. With a deep sigh, her shoulders hunched.
Damn, I've just about blown itI turned to her. "Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so blun-"
She sidled closer, almost shoulder to shoulder.
What the hell does this mean?Nonplussed, I remained still for a few moments. Then deciding to throw caution to the wind, I cautiously put my arm around her shoulder.
Nice shapely shoulder, at that.
Since I was expecting some sort of rejection, I was caught totally off-guard when she proceeded to lay her head on my shoulder.
Well, fortune DOES favours the bold.I breathed out slowly, realizing I had been holding my breath all this while. I gave her shoulder a slight squeeze. Reassurance that finally, both of us were past the awkwardness. I leaned over to kiss her hair.
She looked up at me. "So... what does this mean?"
"Well I'm not sure... what do you think?"
She grinned. "C'mon, take a guess."
"Well... I guess this means I'll have to start asking you out more often, won't I?"
"Hah. I was gonna say I think we should go slow, but your version sucks more."
"Always the honest one."
"My pleasure."
I move closer to her, smelling the faint scent of her perfume and feeling the warmth of her body. Then a thought struck me.
"You never mentioned what that star stood for, you know."
"Oh yeah... well, it's supposed to be the symbol of unrequited love, or something like that."
What irony."You don't really believe in that, do you?"
"I don't, now."
And for the first time in my life, I kissed a girl.
As I look into your eyes,
I see all the reasons why
My life's worth a thousand skies
You're the simplest love I've known,
And the purest one I'll own
No you'll never be alone...
My baby you
Are the reason I could fly
And 'cause of you
I don't have to wonder why
Baby you
There's no more just getting by
You're the reason I feel so alive...- Marc Anthony,
My Baby You
Runnin' away, you can't pretend...
